Financial Freedom - The Ultimate Goal

Retiring from the modern world means many things to different people. To us it simply means going back to a simpler time where electric tools and toys were a luxury and not a standard. Where the media and the propaganda fed to us by the marketing geniuses didn't guide our shopping preferences.

There are many modern traps that people fall into...

A few of them are listed below:

  1. My child must have the 'latest clothes'

  2. My child must have the 'latest high tech gadget, computer, toy, in order to be competitive in this world'

  3. This brand is better. I know the commercial said so.

  4. All babies must drink formula.

  5. All babies must wear disposable diapers

  6. Name brand products are of better quality than store or off brands.

  7. I must have the latest set of rims for my car.

  8. If my car doesn't impress people I will never find a job, get a girlfriend, get married, get laid.

  9. The brand of toothpaste I use will fix my smile.

  10. My dog will be happier, healthier and live longer on this brand of dog food.

  11. If it has a 'celebrity on it' or 'endorsing it' it MUST BE COOL.

  12. That fitting in and being one of the 'in crowd' is THE most important thing on earth.

Lets go into a few of the things that modern society doesn't teach you....

Like:

  1. The latest hottest pair of jeans costs 4 times as much as a cheaper and more durable pair.

  2. That the latest high tech gadget is liable to break, fall apart and will be old technology by next Christmas.

  3. Children used to be raised on Goats Milk, Evaporated Milk and karo syrup or honey and were given liquid vitamins.

  4. Cloth diapers are a bit more work but don't soil the environment with long term waste and can be disinfected, breathe against a child's skin and can save $1000's of dollars Disposable diapers also encourage yeast infections and worsen diaper rash.

  5. Store Brand products are made by the SAME manufactures as NAME LABEL brands. Only difference between the two is the LABEL.

  6. That your car is not an extension of who you are, it only represents how you choose to spend your money and how idiotic and shallow you are.

  7. That NO pill will fix what ails you ... Pills can not correct or change your weight, how much hair you have, how long your penis is, or how good you feel, how well you sleep, how rested you are, how much energy you have.

So all that said, it's time to retire from the world.

Give up competing and trying to keep up with everyone else and start living your life for you.

Instead of worrying about how many minutes you have on your cell phone, start worrying about next years food supply for you and your family, get a prepaid cell phone that is good for EMERGENCIES. Staying connected isn't the most important thing in the world.

Letting go of the modern world is harder on your family than it will be on you most likely. After all you're here, you're reading and you're willing, but your family is likely to be reluctant to give up all those modern conveniences.

In our family we've 'traded' things...... like not using the hair dryer, or not running the computer all night. Or leaving lights on for air conditioning when it's 90+. It takes a lot of trades to earn air conditioning..... We like many people have central heat/air, but NEVER does our thermostat drop below 80 when the air is on.

During the winter, we use wood. The thermostat stays at a wonderful 60....... at night we drop it to 50. Enough to make sure pipes don't freeze.

Air Conditioning is a relatively new invention. So is television. What do you think people did before A/C and video games??

There are other modern ideas that must be left behind besides those creature comforts. Like needing electricity for everything. Like the over use of electricity to begin with, the over use of our water resources.

Do these things matter? Yes..... In the drought in the Southeast last year alone water bills double and tripled in places where city water was supplied in an effort to get people to conserve. Those with wells faced dry wells, creeks and streams. Lakes dried up. Several town reported having to ration water to a few hours a week.

Learning to live in accordance with the rhythm of the earth is one of those ideas it is time for society to embrace. It is time to bring back some of the old methods of living, the ones that were more earth friendly and economical.
